DREAMGIRLS is due to come to Leeds in spring next year, following its smash-hit revival on both sides of the Atlantic.

The musical about a soul girl group features the songs And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, Listen and the anthem One Night Only. The show will run from April 13 to May 1.

Dreamgirls had a critically-acclaimed West End premiere in December 2016 at London’s Savoy Theatre, 30 years after it first opened on Broadway.

The new production was directed and choreographed by Olivier and Tony-award-winning, this Casey Nicholaw, who was responsible for recent hits The Book of Mormon, Mean Girls, Something Rotten! and Disney’s Aladdin.

A spokesman said: “Meet the Dreams, Effie, Lorrell and Deena – three talented young singers in the turbulent 1960s a revolutionary time in American music history. Join the three friends as they embark upon a musical rollercoaster ride through a world of fame, fortune and the ruthless realities of show business, testing their friendships to the very limit.”

In 2016 Dreamgirls was adapted into an Oscar-winning film starring Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx. With book and lyrics by Tom Eyen and music by Henry Krieger, and additional material by Willie Reale, the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls was directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett and opened in 1981, winning six Tony awards.

The original cast recording won two Grammy awards for Best Musical Album and Best Vocal Performance for Jennifer Holliday in the song And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.

Several shows at Leeds Grand and Leeds City Varieties have been rescheduled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
