How the Covid-19 pandemic plays out over the coming months, and possibly years, could have a major impact on your honeymoon plans, but for now, there’s no lockdown on being able to dream

The perfect honeymoon requires the perfect place, with these destinations being the best of the bunch.

Phuket, Thailand

One of the most romantic spots in Thailand, Phuket’s sandy beaches and exotic waters make for the ideal tropical escape for newly-wedded couples.

Very rarely do you come across a destination that has electric nightlife, stunning skylines, deluxe hotels and superb weather, all under one setting.

Not forgetting that you can visit the famous Serenity Senses Spa, shop at Central Festival shopping centre or take a trip to Phi Phi Island.

Crete, Greece

The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is seen as ‘the spirit of the Mediterranean’, and for good reason.

The old town of Chania for example is phenomenal, as you can soak in the tranquil atmosphere with its stunning architecture and imposing lighthouse.

A high recommendation is to make the most of the exquisite Greek cuisine, and to visit the picture perfect beaches and historical landmarks such as Elafonissi Beach and The Palace of Knossos.

Cape Town, South Africa

A dream setting that will leave you itching to go back, is, Cape Town, in South Africa. Called the Mother City, Cape Town is simply a paradise for those in love, with all kinds of activities if you fancy a bit of adventure on your honeymoon.

With its spectacular coastline and hot climate, why not take advantage with a boat cruise in the sunset, go horse riding on Noordhoek beach or have yourself a romantic picnic.

Antarctica

With the first ever wedding taking place in Antarctica in 2017, it is now one of the best places to enjoy your time of peace and harmony.

Not like your traditional getaway with sunny weather, in fact it’s one of the coldest places in the world that requires getting there by plane or ship. You’ll be able to camp under an Antarctic twilight, witness penguins in their natural habitat or unwind in your own private log cabin.

Maldives

Renowned for its blue ocean, white beaches and clean air, who could say no to a honeymoon in the Maldives?

Cherish your private time together by dining in style underwater (yes that’s right underwater) at the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant.

Making the most of the beautiful surroundings doesn’t have to stop there. Why not discover the depths of the ocean in a thrilling submarine ride or go diving and get up close and personal to some of the most extraordinary wildlife.

Fiji

A tropical paradise perfect for both weddings and honeymoons, be prepared to be blown away by the ‘Soft Coral Capital of the World’ with the Great Astrolabe Reef surrounding its 333 islands.

Even the world’s most famous skateboarder Tony Hawk got married here to wife and lingerie designer Lhotse Merriam.

A journey to Turtle Island, where it has previously hosted its fair share of celebrity couples including Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, shouldn’t go amiss either.

Lisbon, Portugal

Up next is Portugal, the country with a famous heritage for producing Port wine, some of the world’s best footballers and Pastel de nata (custard tarts), is inspiring many to come and spend their romantic retreat in luxurious fashion here.

In particular, the capital city Lisbon is making quite the impression.

Plan a romantic evening watching the opera at Teatro Sao Carlos, go wine tasting or take a sunset cruise on the Tagus River.

Bali, Indonesia

It may not be Venice or Paris, but Bali should be right at the top of your list.

According to Instagram it is the most popular honeymoon destination in the world with an impressive 70,600 posts being tagged there.

Whether couples want an adventurous time away or a relaxing one where they can unwind on the beach, Bali will have you covered with its character, charm and beauty.

Bora Bora

Beyond the audacious visits to beaches and glinting turquoise lagoons, Bora Bora has become the next big thing for a honeymoon.

A tiny speck of an island, it still manages to epitomise the element of romance with luxurious hotels and floating villas that have direct access to the sea.

It is also home to authentic experiences such as going on a 4WD tour of the island and being able to climb Mount Pahia.

Paris, France

When it comes to romance, no list is complete without Paris, the city of love.

Follow in the footsteps of Hollywood A-Lister actress Reese Witherspoon, who included Paris on her honeymoon tour with husband Jim Toth.

Watch the sun set at the Eiffel Tower, stroll along the banks of the Seine or, if you’re in a particularly flamboyant mood, why not spend an afternoon baking French pastries together.
