A NEW initiative aims to get Keighley drawing.

Keighley Creative is launching its first-ever Drawing Box project.

In collaboration with artist Naseem Darbey, 500 free boxes of drawing supplies and ideas sheets are being distributed to residents across the town and to supporters of the Keighley Creative Space.

People are being invited to sketch everyday objects around their home as part of the project, which will run from Tuesday, July 28, until September 5.

“The theme is Your House is a Museum,” said Gemma Hobbs, of Keighley Creative.

“We have all spent so much time in our homes over the last few months – and many people still are.

“By choosing objects to draw, we can share our experiences.

“And by promoting the joys of creativity and culture within the home, Naseem is hoping to inspire our sense of wonder in the everyday objects and activities we have access to.”

The drawing boxes can be collected from the former Sunwin House building, Cavendish Retail Park, between 11am and 2pm on July 28 or between the same times on Saturday, August 1.

Boxes are also being dropped-off at foodbanks, shops and community centres.

People will be able to learn more about drawing through online activities and challenges.

A website is being launched early next month.

There will also be live drawing demonstrations from Keighley Creative’s new project space window. They will take place on Saturday, August 15, at 11am, and Saturday, August 29, at 2pm.

And the project will lead to an exhibition at the Keighley Creative gallery next year, jointly curated by participants and the in-house team.

Gemma said anyone struggling to collect a box should get in touch.

“We want to ensure that as many residents as possible can enjoy the project,” she added.

“If you are a Keighley resident – or even a regular visitor to the town – you can register for a box by messaging us on our Facebook or Instagram pages or by emailing Naseem on naseem@keighleycreative.org.

“Should you be unable to leave your home due to the coronavirus situation, get in touch and we will make sure you can join in. Write to us at Keighley Creative, Old Sunwin House Building, Hanover Street, Keighley BD21 3QJ, remembering to include your contact details. Or alternatively, call me on 07983 560273.

“Once you have your box, you will be able to access activities through our new website when it launches, on Facebook and Instagram and at drop-off points around the town.

“If you don’t have internet access, talk to us and we will work out the best way for you to be able to receive regular project updates.”
