TRADE unionists have thrown their weight behind a campaign for a cycleway through the Queensbury Tunnel.

West Yorkshire Association of Trades Union Councils (WYATUC) has highlighted calls for the tunnel to be transformed from a liability to an asset. The organisation, whose members include Keighley TUC, said a cycleway offered social, environmental, health and economic benefits.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority this month agreed to spend £500,000 developing options for how the tunnel could be part of a green transport link connecting Halifax, Keighley and Bradford, after the Department for Transport announced £1 million funding for a business case on its redevelopment.

Highways England said it was carrying out work that would benefit any future plans to reopen the tunnel, including filling a short section of the tunnel under shaft 3. This was a high-risk area where flooding had occurred, and needed strengthening to prevent further collapse, and for the safety of residents living close to the top of shaft 3, as well as the workforce.
