KEIGHLEY fire chiefs are urging homeowners where possible to keep their wheeled bins away from the house.

The plea follows an incident in which flames from a burning bin spread to the guttering and pipework of a property in River Mount, Riddlesden.

Firefighters used a large water jet and hose reel to tackle the blaze, which had been started deliberately.

One crew from Keighley Fire Station attended the incident, shortly after 11pm yesterday.

The house was unoccupied at the time and a neighbour raised the alarm.

"Fortunately we were alerted quite quickly and managed to stop the fire spreading inside the house," said watch manager Ahsan Ali, of Keighley Fire Station.

"We always advise people, where possible, to keep their bins away from the property."

Soon after the incident, the crew was called to deal with a car fire at the junction of Eaton Street and Oakfield Road, Ingrow.

It is believed the fire, which extensively damaged the Ford Focus, was started deliberately.
