A KEIGHLEY supermarket has launched an online shopping department with click-and-collect service.

Sainsbury's has introduced the move following a surge in web shopping since the start of lockdown – which has left customers waiting weeks for a delivery slot or facing a trip to Bradford, Halifax or Burnley to collect their goods.

Now shoppers can order their items online and collect them from the Cavendish Street store at a pre-arranged time.

Orders are processed and shopping sorted and bagged before the store opens.

Payment is taken on the day of collection.

Sainsbury's says various measures are in place to protect the public against Covid-19.

A spokesman said: "When arriving at the store, customers will have the option to remain inside their vehicles while store colleagues load the shopping into the boot – or staff will step away from the vehicle while the customer loads the shopping themselves. This interaction is extremely limited and adheres strictly to social distancing guidelines in order to keep both the customers and colleagues safe.

"The service is a temporary measure through lockdown to aid the most vulnerable and those people who are continuing to shield themselves. Currently there is no delivery option available, but with increased demand the department could become a permanent feature and a delivery service may be part of that.

"We are pleased to offer shoppers a new way to get the goods they need during these uncertain times."
