SECURE cycle stands are being installed at locations across the district as part of moves to encourage more people to travel by bike and on foot.
Facilities will be provided at Airedale Hospital, Steeton, and at 19 council car parks.
The car parks include Church Green and Cooke Street – next to the town hall – in Keighley, and Wesley Place at Silsden.
As part of the Government’s Emergency Active Travel scheme – being delivered in two phases – Bradford Council is using £600,000 to create new cycle lanes, bike parking facilities, improved pavements, pedestrian crossings and modifications to reduce traffic and improve safety.
The first phase is expected to be completed this month while other plans are still awaiting approval from central Government.
Proposals for the second phase include a pilot project at ten schools across the district.
It would involve temporary road closures on surrounding streets at school opening and closing times.
It is hoped the £2.3 million second phase will be completed by April next year.
Other suggestions include ‘pop-up’ cycle lanes at various locations in the district.
