COUNCILLOR Andrew Cooper has been selected by the Green Party as its candidate in next year’s West Yorkshire mayoral elections.
And in what is thought to be a first for a metro mayor poll, he has asked the selection contest runner-up – Hawarun Hussain – to stand for deputy mayor.
Cllr Cooper, leader of the Green group on Kirklees Council, won the mayor nomination after receiving 58 per cent of the vote in an internal poll of members.
He said: “I am delighted to have been selected by Green Party members in our region to be the candidate in next year’s mayoral elections.
“The Greens want to see more democracy and more decisions made in our region, but the Government in Westminster has forced this flawed mayoral system on us without offering the option of a regional assembly elected by proportional representation.”
