YOUTUBERS broke into the Wyvern Theatre under cover of darkness while it was closed.

The two urban explorers known as Kirbz Vidz mocked the building’s security measures after climbing onto a roof, avoiding alarms and finding an unlocked maintenance room with a CCTV system displaying an error message.

They even made their way into the main theatre and control room, flicking switches and playing with the sound system while they were in there.

Music from one of their phones echoed around the empty auditorium.

The duo then went backstage and climbed into the rafters to look at the safety curtain control system, then headed back down onto the stage itself before peeking into the dressing rooms and prop storage.

They made their escape through the stage door.

The pair sounded surprised about how easy it was to gain access to the building and explore for more than half an hour without being caught.

It is not known when exactly they entered the cultural venue but the video of their exploits was uploaded onto YouTube a few days ago.

One worried viewer told the Adver: "The security is laughable. Intruders had the full run of the venue and filmed it for all to enjoy.

"They had the potential to cause untold damage. Questions should be asked. They were in the venue for ages so why did nobody answer the alarm call? They should hang their heads in shame at how easy this intrusion was."

The theatre is closed due to lockdown restrictions making it impossible to stage the usual productions and events. Most staff have been furloughed.

Wyvern Theatre director Laura James said: "They gained access to the roof via scaffolding which has been temporarily put in place by Swindon Borough Council for the purpose of essential roof repair works and entered the building through an unsecure a roof hatch.

"Building alarms were triggered, but the early stage scaffolding alarm failed to notify the police, which would have called a halt to the incident.

"A full review of building security has been undertaken in response to the incident, and the scaffold security has been reviewed by Swindon Borough Council’s contractors in order to ensure that this type of incident cannot be repeated."

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: “These two individuals put themselves at risk by scaling scaffolding which had been put up to enable essential repairs to be carried out on the roof.

"Their behaviour was both foolish and irresponsible and should not be lauded in any way. It is disappointing they have been given undue publicity and we strongly condemn their immature actions.”
