IT is "like Christmas come early" as shops around Bradford have been reported brisk trade with many people taking advantage of a last bit of freedom the day before national lockdown.

Catherine Riley, centre manager at Kirkgate Shopping Centre, said: "It's mega-busy. It's like Christmas come early.

"People are wary of when lockdown may end and if they are in a position to buy now, they area.

"We've had queues for several retailers just to keep everybody safe."

Smyth's Toys in Bradford had a full car park this morning as many shoppers have started buying  toys for little ones for Christmas.

One shopper said: “The car park was full and we couldn’t find a space. It was almost empty last time we came. The store doesn’t look as busy as it was as everyone is social distancing.”

Responding to demand from customers, Mrs Riley said Kirkgate has opened at 8am and has extended its closing hours to 6.30pm.

"People are not hoarding. They're just buying presents for Christmas and clothes for little ones who keep on growing.

She said stores like New Look and Yours have sales on today, at 25 per cent and 20 per cent off respectively on a full price items.
