FIREFIGHTERS have been working flat out through the night as they tackle the large fire at the old go-kart site on Upper Castle Street in East Bowling which is expected to burn for days.

Crews from across the Bradford district have been sending firefighters to help try and extinguish the fire which is consuming numerous old tyres at the site.

A total of nine fire engines and 2 aerial appliances were still in attendance at the scene at 8am this morning.

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We’re continuing to advise all local residents to keep windows and doors closed, and for people to avoid travelling through the area."

A firefighter at Cleckheaton Fire Station said this morning: "The fire will be burning for days. Tyres are extremely difficult to put out. They need to submerged in water but obviously when they are stacked on land you can't do that."

As firefighters continue to work, the fire continues to cause problems with transport and smoke and the proximity of the fire have forced several school closures.

PC Sarah Barberini from the West Yorkshire Police tweeted: "There are still numerous road closures on throughout the night and into the morning.

"Firefighters are working flat out and numerous of officers and council workers are on road closures. Please pay attention to signage and directions."

West Yorkshire Police's Contact Management Centre also tweeted: "Please avoid the area."

Five schools will also remain closed today due to the fire.

Bronte Girls' Academy, Dixons Free Sixth Form, Dixon City Academy and New College Bradford will remain closed due to the fire and road closures in the area.

Rainbow Primary School is also remaining closed because of dangerous levels of acrid smoke from the fire in the local area.

The large fire near Bradford Interchange has resulted in all lines being blocked and trains are expected to remain disrupted until the end of the day.

Trains are unable to run to and from the Interchange and train services will be cancelled in full or be diverted not to call at the station.

Some trains will start or terminate at alternative stations to normal.
