PEOPLE across Keighley are being warned to be on their guard against so-called courier fraud after a number of incidents.

Action Fraud and West Yorkshire Police have joined forces to issue the warning.

They say victims, normally the elderly or vulnerable, receive a cold call from someone purporting to be a police officer or bank official.

Typically, the victim is told to withdraw a sum of money and someone is sent to the person’s home to collect it.

Fraudsters may also convince the victim to transfer money to a ‘secure’ bank account, or hand over their bank cards or personal details.

“There have been some very distressing incidents,” said a West Yorkshire Police spokesman.

“Your bank or the police will never call to ask you to verify your personal details or PIN by phone, or offer to pick-up your bank card by courier. Hang-up immediately if you receive a call like this.

“Your debit or credit card is yours – don’t let a stranger take it from you. You should only ever have to hand it over at your bank. If it’s cancelled or expired, destroy it yourself.”

Further information about types of fraud and how to avoid becoming a victim can be found at actionfraud.police.uk.

If you think you’ve been a victim, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud – the national reporting centre – online or by calling 0300 123 2040.
