A CENTRE which provides support to refugees and asylum seekers has won backing from Keighley town councillors.

The Good Shepherd Centre in Keighley is benefitting from the ward development funds of four council members – Clare Abberton, Emanuele Bernardini, Peter Corkindale and John Kirby.

Funding is helping to pay for emergency boiler and central heating repairs.

Councillor Corkindale, the town mayor, said: “The work of the Good Shepherd Centre is a vital link between the town and those vulnerable people who are either here as refugees or asylum seekers, or have been born here and are simply in need of help.

“We as a town council are uniquely positioned to assist such organisations and it is – and always will be – a pleasure and an honour to help those who give of their time and expertise to do what I believe we as a nation are best at, showing our humanity. Long may it continue.”

Dorota Plata, the centre manager, voiced thanks for the support.

“It’s such great news for us and the families we help,” she said. “Fixing our heating system will make a massive difference for everyone.”
