TEAMS which supported communities across the district in the battle against flooding have been praised for their efforts.

Bradford Council officers worked with the fire service, police, volunteers and residents as melting snow and rain brought floods to several areas.

Five community emergency groups that were set-up at ‘hotspots’ in the district following the Boxing Day floods of 2015 swung into action early on Thursday – putting in place flood defences, monitoring river levels and liaising with residents. They reported back to the council to help it target resources.

Areas where flooding occurred included Castlefields at Crossflatts. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and council drainage workers pumped out water there to help protect properties.

There was also a power outage in Haworth on Thursday morning, which affected around 1,800 properties.

Staff from the council carried out welfare checks on vulnerable and elderly residents across the district throughout the day.

Council leader, Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, said: “I’d like to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of council officers, partners, volunteers and residents for all they did to put in place flood defence measures in communities across the district and for their resilience. Everyone pulled together to protect communities.”
