A LIBRARY book found in Keighley is being returned – over half a century after it was borrowed!

The book was discovered by Matt Arnold, of the Ingrow-based Bahamas Locomotive Society and museum, while sifting through donations for a future second-hand sale.

Railway Holiday in Switzerland – by George Behrend – was loaned out by Bingham Library in Nottinghamshire in December, 1970. It should have been returned by April, ‘71.

Mr Arnold, the loco society’s learning and community engagement manager, said: “Initially I was intrigued by the bold yellow cover and old-fashioned typeface. I noticed the dates as soon as I opened the book and presumed it was still ‘on loan’ as there was no stamp to say it had been withdrawn from stock.

“I’ve contacted Nottingham Libraries and have arranged to return the book to its proper home. Fees for the late return of books are currently suspended. The usual charge is 20p per day – but we’re not looking at a fine of about £3,650 as each book’s fee is capped at £8!”
