THIS year's Riddlesden Gala is the latest event to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Whilst lockdown restrictions are set to be gradually eased, event organisers say uncertainty over precisely how the relaxation of restrictions will progress in the next few months makes planning virtually impossible.

The gala – which was also postponed in 2020 – was scheduled to be held on June 19 this year.

But the organising committee said today it had made the “difficult decision” to cancel.

“In the end we all agreed that our event was too close to the Government’s proposed date of June 21 for all social distancing to end,” said a spokesman.

“We could not risk any financial commitments or abortive work should things take a turn for the worse and the guidelines are changed.

“We realised some people would be desperate for an event to look forward to, but others might still be too concerned to attend such a gathering.

“In the meantime we want everyone to know that the committee is still here working hard to pull together a brilliant event – which will be back on June 18, 2022, bigger and better, when everyone can enjoy the procession, activities and entertainment and feel safe.

“We will also be supporting other events which do go ahead this year at Riddlesden St Mary’s Primary School and within the community.”

The committee says it would be delighted to receive people’s memories and photos of past galas.

Riddlesden Gala was established more than 35 years ago. Since its formation, the event – which features a procession through the village and attractions at the school site – has raised thousands of pounds for local charities.
