RESIDENTS living near a grass verge are being given a vote over its future in a bid to end a wrangle stretching back two years.

The verge – in Race Moor Lane, Oakworth – was the subject of a public meeting in 2019, after villager Irene Fowler put forward a proposal to maintain and improve the overgrown site.

There were some objections to the plan, particularly around the idea of including a bench – which sparked fears over anti-social behaviour and loss of privacy.

The bench idea has since been dropped.

Now villagers living within around 100 metres of the verge – between 130 and 150 people – are being sent ballot papers.

Each adult is being asked whether they are for or against Mrs Fowler’s proposal, which includes carrying out general maintenance of the site and planting to encourage and support wildlife.

The referendum is being conducted via Keighley Town Council, with the help of Oakworth ward councillor Luke Maunsell.

He said the verge scheme had been beset by problems.

“Despite initial confusion a licence giving permission was ultimately provided by Bradford Council – which owns the land – however further issues have been raised,” said Cllr Maunsell.

“As a result of all of this, Bradford Council has asked for a formal consultation in the form of an advisory referendum.

“If over half of residents vote in agreement to the suggestion, a new licence will be issued and the work will carry on.

“This issue has been going on for two years now and it needs resolving one way or another.

“The referendum should provide a clear result and will allow everyone to move on as appropriate.

“I want to thank town council staff for working with me to ensure the vote can go ahead in a fair and proper manner.

“And I would urge residents to get involved.”

The vote runs until May 17.

Households involved are in Race Moor Lane, Dendrum Close, Moor Way and a top section of Moor Drive.

Each home is receiving two ballot papers initially.

Households with more than two adult occupants can request further ballot papers, which will be issued subject to checks.

Homes with only one adult occupant are required to return unneeded ballot forms.
