BROADCASTER and journalist John Humphrys has given many a politician – and other public figures – a grilling over the years.

But the man renowned for his no-nonsense interviewing techniques will have the tables turned on himself when he makes a ‘virtual visit’ to the Worth Valley.

He will answer questions during an online Evening with John Humphrys, being staged by Haworth & Worth Valley Rotary Club.

Proceeds from the event – which takes place on Tuesday, June 15, at 7.30pm – will be split between Mr Humphrys’ charity, the Kitchen Table Charities Trust, and Rotary causes.

Mr Humphrys, 77, has been described by national media as “the most ferocious and insightful interviewer of his generation”.

He left BBC Radio Four’s flagship current affairs programme, Today, in 2019.

He’d been at the helm for 33 years, making him the longest-serving presenter of any current affairs programme in the history of the BBC.

And in February Mr Humphrys announced he was standing down as presenter of the BBC quiz programme Mastermind, after 18 years.

During his six decades in journalism he has also been a foreign correspondent, television newsreader, newspaper columnist and author.

He has won a string of broadcasting awards, including the Sony Gold Medal for lifetime achievement.

Mr Humphrys still writes a newspaper column and presents programmes for radio station Classic FM.

And he has penned eight books, the latest being his own memoir, A Day Like Today.

His charity gives grants to small causes and projects in some of the world’s poorest countries, mostly to help with children’s education.

He says: “The most important gift you can give children who have nothing is teach them to read and write. Without that ability they have no hope.”

Gary Gardner, Haworth & Worth Valley Rotary Club’s project leader, said: “It’s only fair that John’s charity – the Kitchen Table Charities Trust – should benefit as he is making himself available for us.

“The trust does amazing work and it’s a great fit because we in Rotary share the same kind of ideals and objectives as them. We’re delighted to support the charity.

“We’ve also been looking for a way to raise cash for Rotary’s charities and this is going to be a major event for us.”

Anyone buying a ticket will be able to put forward questions.

Tickets are available at haworthrotary.co.uk/go/john-humphrys.

There is an early-bird offer of family tickets for £8.50 if bought before Monday, April 26.

After that, the price rises to £10.

All the money raised will be shared between Rotary charities both locally and internationally, and Mr Humphrys’ charity.

Further information about the evening is available on the Haworth & Worth Valley Rotary Club website and its Facebook page.
