SPECSAVERS – which has a branch in Keighley – says soaring interest in gardening during lockdown could spell problems for hay fever sufferers this summer.

Sales of plants and gardening equipment have surged as people have spent more time in their gardens.

But Specsavers says that for many people, gardens can become a ‘no go zone’ during peak pollen season.

It has issued advice to help people cope.

Giles Edmonds, for Specsavers, said: “As well as sneezing and a blocked or runny nose, hay fever can also cause red, itchy or watery eyes, which can be particularly problematic for contact lens wearers.

“Those who wear contact lenses may notice the vision through their lenses can appear smeary and eyes can generally feel uncomfortable. While it can be tempting to rub your eyes, it’s important to refrain. Try not to touch your face and ensure you maintain good hand hygiene, particularly while the pandemic continues.”

Other advice for hay fever sufferers includes:

* Put Vaseline around your nose to trap pollen

* Change your clothes and shower after being outside. Wear a face mask when outside to lower the rate of inhalation of pollen, spores and dust

* Try to stay inside and close windows when pollen counts are high.
