Horton-in-Ribblesdale

Church news: There will be no church service at St Oswalds on Rogation Sunday which is also the sixth Sunday of Eastertide. However there will be services at St Peter`s Church at Stainforth at 10.30am and St John`s at Langcliffe at 6pm.

Rogation days are days of prayer and fasting before Ascension Day. In 470 the Church introduced Rogationtide to replace a pagan Roman festival at which animals were sacrificed to appease the god of agricultural disease. In the new Christian ceremony crops were blessed and parishioners walked with the priest around the boundaries of the parish asking for God’s protection on the village (Latin: rogare = to ask). Knowledge of boundaries and boundary stones was also passed to the next two generations during the walk.

Our ancestors sung the Litany of the Saints on their “gang day” - gang is Anglo-Saxon for going. ‘Where’s thee gang?’ is often a common question in our part of the dales and this was one of the first sentences that a new local resident overhead when he arrived from Germany. He was completely flummoxed, but soon learned the dialect!

Rogation ceremonies arrived in England in the 7th century and the oldest known text for Rogationtide is from around 1173. St Oswald’s church was built in 1152 so to our ancestors in the faith it would be yet another one of those new-fangled festivals from Rome. We can imagine the congregations at St Oswald’s – and those gathered around the now lost preaching crosses in Giggleswick and Ewecross or Yewcross – setting out on their long walk.

Lundy volunteer: Congratulations to Adam Waters of Selside who has been chosen from over a thousand applicants to be a volunteer on Lundy Island. You can follow Adam on Instagram lad_on_lundy.

About three miles long and half a mile wide, Lundy is part of Devon and was donated to the National Trust in 1969. It’s managed by the Landmark Trust, a conservation charity that derives its income from day trips and holiday lettings. Lundy has a rich bird life and, as it’s on a migration route, attracts many vagrant and indigenous species. It also boasts rare seaweeds, corals and sponges.

Adam developed and honed some of his conservation skills in Ingleborough Scouts.

Workers’ Memorial Day: On Wednesday, April 28, members of the local Labour Party and representatives from local trade unions, gathered in Skipton and Settle to remember all of those who have lost their lives at work, or from work-related injury and diseases.

This year, the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed an occupational health crisis in workplaces worldwide, though from a local perspective there are many incidents that affect people who work within agricultural. There are around 360,000 people working in agriculture, which equates to 1% of the total workforce in the UK, yet the sector is responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents at work. This means about 30 farm workers are killed in accidents every year.

Brian McDaid from the local Labour Party and also Assistant General Secretary for Aegis the Union said during the event: “We are here today to remember those who have lost their lives and are affected by workplace injuries, whilst also sending a message that health and safety protection at work must be recognised as a right for all.

“Every worker should have a right to a voice and a right to protection.”

Climate emergency: Settle town councillors will be presenting their recently agreed Climate and Biodiversity Policy Report to the next Action on Climate Emergency Settle and area (ACE) Green Cafe meeting on Saturday, May 8. The virtual meeting opens at 10.30am and the one hour presentation will start at 11am.

Councillor Robert Bellfield, chair of the council’s climate change working group who will lead the team giving the presentation said: “The council is committed to its climate change and biodiversity policy and plan, and would like to invite local businesses and the people of Settle to join in taking action to mitigate climate change and the loss of biodiversity.”

Skipton Soroptimists has been meeting online but hopes to return to meeting in person soon. The club meets twice a month, on Mondays – one is a business meeting and one has a guest speaker. Rosalie Holdroyd is the incoming president of Soroptimist International of Skipton. She has planned a fascinating programme with some excellent speakers including a retired circuit judge, a young woman who fled with her children from war-torn Syria and has now built up a successful business and another young woman who is training a puppy for someone who is hearing impaired. Rosalie has also set us a hundred challenges for the hundredth anniversary, so we’re going to be busy.

There are also a number of social events planned including a 1940s night, strawberry tea and carols in the castle.

It is a kind, friendly organisation. If you’re interested in joining a group of intelligent, lively-minded and interesting women, please email: membership@siskipton.org.uk You can also find them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/siskipton
