THIS is a sight which would have people stopping in their tracks these days - animal carcases hanging outside a butcher’s shop.

It wasn’t unusual to see game and birds for the Christmas table hanging up, but sheep and pigs, many with their heads still on? How times change.

The butchers is Phillip & Sons, and was in Skipton High Street where Boots now stands.

The building was demolished in 1928 and this picture is understood to have been taken around 1909.

It shows the Phillip brothers:William, Richard and John. John also had the Craven Arms, in Newmarket Street. Picture: Rowley Ellwood Collection.
