VOLUNTEERS across Keighley have been making a clean sweep.

They have taken part in a One Hour Tidy initiative staged by regeneration body Keighley Big Local, in support of the Great British Spring Clean.

Kicking-off the venture were future police officers and armed forces and fire service personnel.

Two ‘bubbles’ of Keighley College public service students did their bit – collecting a total haul which included 16 bagfuls of litter, a traffic cone, air conditioning pipe, a car wheel, bucket of tile grout and fire extinguisher!

The debris was then collected and disposed of by Bradford Council’s street cleansing team.

Youngsters from the 2nd Riddlesden Brownie pack cleared rubbish from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath between their meeting place at the United Reformed Church and the Marquis of Granby.

Play sessions were incorporated into One Hour Tidy stints at Hainworth and the Beeches play area in Stockbridge.

And volunteers from the River Worth Friends have also been involved in the operation.

Shaun O’Hare, for Big Local, said he was delighted with the success of the One Hour Tidy venture – which follows on from similar sessions held previously.

People were urged to give-up 60 minutes of their time to help clean their neighbourhoods.

“We have been really pleased with the response to the return of the One Hour Tidy sessions for the Great British Spring Clean,” said Shaun.

“It’s Big Local’s way of supporting good neighbours, building on that sense of community and providing a catalyst for discussion about further ideas and more ambitious projects involving residents.

“There’s a lot more planned for the summer months, including practical conservation, leisure learning, play, exercise and celebrations!”
