VOLUNTEERS are doing the spadework to help keep a village looking its best.

Members of Morton In Bloom planted a display of flowers and shrubs on the village green as part of their latest session.

Group treasurer Mick Hawran said: “We love doing this and making the village cheerful for people who are walking by. We get a lot of positive comments and it makes the whole place look beautiful.”

The volunteers – who look after various areas around the village – normally meet monthly, but they have stepped-up efforts recently to clear flowerbeds and baskets ahead of the summer planting.

Bradford Council provided £500 for plants through a community chest grant and residents donated via crowdfunding to buy new planters.

Mr Hawran thanked everyone for their support.

Ward councillor Caroline Firth joined the latest session and paid tribute to the volunteers. “They work hard – month in and month out – to ensure the village looks lovely and we are very proud of them,” she said.
