A SUPERMARKET giant is trialling glass milk bottles.
Morrisons – which has a store in Worth Way, Keighley – says the move is part of a drive to reduce plastic use.
The one-pint bottles are delivered directly to supermarkets by dairy farmers and once returned are collected, sanitised and reused.
They retail at £1.
Initially the scheme is being piloted at stores in Sheffield and Kent, but is set to be rolled-out across the country.
Natasha Cook, for Morrisons, said: “We want to help our customers live their lives with less plastic.
“Reusing glass milk bottles is an easy leap for many people to make because they remember that this was how milk used to arrive on the doorstep.
“The introduction of the glass bottles is expected to remove 40,000 plastic bottles from Morrisons stores each year as well as reduce CO2 emissions, as delivery from local suppliers means milk covers shorter distances.”
