UNEMPLOYMENT across the Bradford district has risen slightly, latest figures show.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics shows there was a total of 29,545 people claiming out-of-work benefits last month, the equivalent of 8.9 per cent of the working-age population.

The figure compares to 5.7 per cent for the Yorkshire and the Humber region and 5.5 per cent nationally.

July’s Bradford-district total represents a rise of 170, from 29,375, the previous month.

Of those claiming out-of-work benefits, 17,540 were male and 12,005 female.

Bradford West had the district’s highest unemployment rate at 12.1 per cent. It was followed by Bradford East at 11.6 per cent, Bradford South at 9.1 per cent, Keighley at 5.5 per cent and Shipley – which includes Cullingworth and Denholme – at 4.5 per cent. The figures show Bradford has the highest unemployment rate in Yorkshire and the Humber, followed by Hull and Doncaster.
