RIDDLESDEN Guides are making a clean sweep.

They have carried out a series of litter picks after a Bradford Council grant helped the group buy equipment and tabards.

The Guides, from the 2nd Riddlesden company, were joined at one event by Keighley East district councillor Caroline Firth.

Unit leader Emma Groves-Jones said: “We have used the equipment several times for picks in Riddlesden – we did one with Keighley Big Local recently and have carried out a few riverside ones too.

“We plan to ‘adopt’ the canal towpath near our hut to continue the great work.”

Councillor Firth praised the Guides’ efforts and said she had enjoyed joining the girls at one of the sessions.

“I had a great time – the Guides were lots of fun and clearly they like getting out and about in the community doing a good deed for others,” she added.

“It’s such a shame though that they – like so many other volunteers in our communities, as well as our council cleansing team – have to clear away mess left by people who can’t be bothered to take their rubbish home or put it in a bin.”
