YOUNG people are being given the chance to help shape the future of health and social care services across the district.

Healthwatch Bradford and District – based at Central Hall in Alice Street, Keighley – is launching a platform for 16-to-24-year-olds to have their say.

There will be an immediate opportunity to get involved in shaping sexual health services, whilst other projects could include spotlighting the impact of lockdown on young people's mental wellbeing or harnessing latest digital developments to keep communities informed.

Members of Young Healthwatch will also have the chance to carry out research, develop and manage social media platforms, engage with the public at events and build their own knowledge of the workings of the health and social care sector.

Helen Rushworth, manager of Healthwatch Bradford and District, says it's vital that young people's voices are heard.

She said: "Health and care issues affect every one of us – whether it’s our mental health during the pandemic, or we provide care for a loved one who needs it, need to find a dentist, or a million other reasons.

"We’re all unique and we all have our own stories, our own voices – and it’s vital that those responsible for health and care services routinely hear from as many of those voices as possible about what matters to them.

"Are you aged 16 to 24 and living in Bradford district? Are you a passionate voice for your community, campaigner for change, social media expert or video guru or do you just love talking to others and making connections? We can give you a platform to make sure young people's voices are listened to when it comes to developing health and social care services in our district."

She added: "Members will also gain skills and experience that will stand out on a CV.

"Working with Young Healthwatch might be ideal for future journalists, filmmakers or charity leaders, or anyone planning a career in health or social care. Members may simply want to shine a light on the issues that matter in their community or give a voice to those who go unheard, and they can devote as much or as little time as they wish."

Healthwatch acts as an independent 'champion' for people who use health and social care services.

It speaks out on users' behalf, to ensure concerns are addressed.
