A KEIGHLEY rap star said he was "surprised but delighted" to be chosen to headline a top BBC Radio1Xtra concert.

Islam Hussain, aka Issy, was selected by promoters to head-up the North East Love and Music event with Radio 1 DJ Seani B.

The concert was held at the Mint Club, in Middlesbrough.

It was 20-year-old Issy's second event with BBC Radio1Xtra.

He also recently performed live at Bradford Hotel.

"Promoter Jah Hanief selected me for the latest concert after seeing an energetic live performance that I gave in front of 1,000 partygoers," said Issy.

"It's great to see young, new British rappers emerging after lockdown and doing positive live shows.

"My family has been a great support – especially my father Saby, who is also a hip hop promoter and is helping me with management."

Issy – a former student of South Craven School, at Cross Hills – has also been approached by promoters from London, Dubai and New York about events in the summer.

In 2020, he featured in a hip hop video – made in Keighley – promoting an anti-bullying message.

During lockdown, Issy – who is also an award-winning poet – wrote up to 30 songs.
