NEW demands for action have been made over the state of a busy main road.

It's claimed the condition of the A6034 at Silsden is putting people's safety in jeopardy.

Keighley Road near the new Lindum housing development, opposite Aldi, has been cited as a problem hotspot.

Potholes, an uneven road surface and unlit traffic islands all pose a danger, it is alleged.

Now Craven Labour Party member David Loud, who lives in the town, is demanding that Bradford Council's highways department urgently addresses the issues.

"Unless we continue to push the local authority – and the developer – I fear the condition of the road will remain in its present state for months to come," he said. "Roadworks in the town have compounded the issue."

Mr Loud says he has been in contact with the council to seek answers.

He added: "The highways department has been asleep at the wheel in allowing the poor state of the road surface to become so protracted.

"Nobody seems to know who's responsible. If the responsibility is with the developer, building control needs to put a stop on all activities until Keighley Road is reinstated and properly lit."

A Bradford Council spokesperson says: "We share local people’s frustrations with the resurfacing of the A6034, which is taking much longer than we’d like or expect.

"Our highways team has been working hard to sort this out but there are a number of issues which are outside our control, including construction and utility services' delays linked to the Lindum housing development.

"The road through Silsden presents various constraints and works have to be carefully timed to avoid complete gridlock.

"We will continue to work with the developer to resolve this as quickly as possible.

"However, we are considering formal enforcement action if they cannot present us with a viable timetable of when the works will be complete as soon as possible."

Lindum director, James Nellist, told us: "We have been undertaking important works to provide 156 affordable homes for the community on this brownfield site. It involves highway alterations and upgrades as well as significant works to the incoming services, which have been slightly delayed due to technical approvals and other unforeseen circumstances.

"As always, we will endeavour to have these works completed in good time to limit any impact on the local highway operation. Night work to repair the road is beginning this week."
