KEIGHLEY people are to be asked for their views on the town's 'green space'.

A parish poll will be held over the future of the former college site, at the junction of North Street and Cavendish Street.

The land is earmarked for a health and wellbeing centre, but the scheme has divided opinion.

Campaigners are calling for the site to be retained as an open area, and the 'health hub' built on an alternative brownfield plot.

At a parish meeting, in Keighley Civic Centre, it was agreed to hold a poll amongst all registered electors in the town.

Three questions will be put: Do you want a health and wellbeing hub in Keighley? Do you want a health and wellbeing hub on the vacant land at the corner of North Street & Cavendish Street? Should the vacant land at the corner of North Street & Cavendish Street be recognised as a public open space?

Town mayor, Councillor Luke Maunsell, said: "The electors of Keighley have decided to hold a public poll on the issue of the old college site on the corner of North Street and Cavendish Street. As mayor, I urge the people of this town to turn out and get their voice heard.

"More democracy is never a bad thing and I hope all will engage constructively in this debate, regardless of their views on the issue, to enable a truly representative result of the poll."

He added that the poll will be held within 25 days and will be overseen by Bradford Council as the elections authority. Polling stations will be open between 4pm and 9pm on the designated day.
