A KEIGHLEY brewery has produced a new beer in support of war-ravaged Ukraine.

Wishbone Brewery is donating profits from sales of the lager to causes in the country.

The four per cent ABV tipple is being launched on the brewery's bar at the Taste:BD food and drink festival, Centenary Square, Bradford, this weekend (April 29/30).

Ukrainian refugees now living in the region were involved in helping to create the beer.

Adrian Chapman, for Wishbone Brewery, says: "It's just over a year since Putin launched his full-scale invasion of Ukraine and we've been wanting to find a way that our brewery could play a small part in helping the people of the country.

"I like the fact this will also help to remind people that the war is still going on and Ukraine's people need our support.

"With Eurovision coming up too, there's no better time to stick a couple of fingers up to Putin."

The lager has been brewed using Ukrainian-grown hops, sourced from a Canadian supplier after a worldwide hunt.

The Klon-18 hops are similar to the well-known Czech Saaz, which according to the brewery "brings a lovely spicy floral character to the crisp easy drinking lager".

Adrian adds: "In the early phases of planning the beer we reached out to Bradford Ukrainian Community Centre and worked together to think about some names that carried meaning to Ukrainians and would resonate with local beer drinkers.

"The phrase 'Russian War Ship, Go **** Yourself' has adorned billboards and T-shirts across Ukraine and the world, so we took the name from that.

"We know that the name may shock some people, but the actions of Russia in invading a peaceful country have had a profound impact on us all, and especially the Ukrainian people.

"The invasion and subsequent displacement of millions of Ukrainians has seen the community here open its doors to people arriving in the district."

Three Ukrainian refugees attended the brew day this month, and took part in various elements of the process.

"They were fascinated by the brewing procedure and are delighted to have helped create a product that will go to support their homeland," says Adrian.

"Wishbone Brewery will be donating all the beer's profits to causes in Ukraine, equating to about 40p from each pint. Anyone wishing to stock the beer, which will be available in 30-litre key kegs to trade direct, should contact the brewery."
