A HAWORTH couple whose daughter took her own life have co-founded a website to help others facing the impact of suicide.

Roger Cunliffe and wife Anna Scott, together with four other people, have launched the site – speaktheirname.org

Speak Their Name was 'born' out of a Yorkshire quilt initiative, in which families bereaved by suicide knitted, sewed and stitched memorial squares, each dedicated to a loved one.

The non-profit website is an expansion of the idea.

Anybody who has lost someone to suicide can create a personal, digital memorial page.

People visiting the site are able to explore resources, and join the effort to support families and friends affected by suicide.

Roger says: "By raising awareness and providing a platform for connection and support, the website aims to reduce the stigma surrounding suicide and create a growing network of compassion and understanding for the tens of thousands of people impacted by it."

He and Anna's daughter, Ellen, a young mum, took her own life two days after her 23rd birthday in June, 2017.

"Life was just beginning for Ellen after overcoming some terrible hurdles," says Roger.

"Kindness and empathy shone out of every pore. She would notice the small things, and try her best to be supportive to anyone who needed help.

"In her last video blog post, she said she wanted to spend her life helping people with mental health problems.

"We'll always miss her; a truly special person – loving, kind, caring, spontaneous, determined, sweet Ellen.

"She had so much sparkle and promise."

Roger and Anna are co-directors of the Yorkshire Speak Their Name Suicide Memorial Quilt.

Anna says: "The day that Ellen took her own life, my life changed beyond all recognition.

"I put my heart and soul into the embroidered square I made for her, and each time I see the quilt I'm reminded of my connection with people who have suffered the same devastating loss.

"Now – through Speak Their Name – Ellen’s square and story is always available to us and others, and we are reaching out to the thousands more like us who have experienced this unimaginable pain."

The launch of the website took place just ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day, which is dedicated to preventing suicide and suicidal behaviour and alleviating its impacts.
