A SILSDEN man has been honoured at the House of Lords after being invited to attend the TUKKA Awards 2025 on November 24.
The prestigious event marked the 50th anniversary of Great Britain’s historic achievement in 1975, when the national karate team were crowned World Team Karate Champions in Long Beach, California - a milestone still regarded as one of the sport’s greatest British triumphs.
Paul Newby - owner of both NCAA Martial Arts Gym and The Tapping Foot Irish Bar in Silsden - was among the distinguished guests at the celebration.
Newby received The Sensei Steve Arneil Award, recognising not only his own world title in karate but also his longstanding contributions to martial arts at community, national and international levels. The award was formally presented by Lord Baron Sharpe of Epsom, OBE, adding further significance to the occasion.
Newby said the invitation and recognition were a source of immense pride, both personally and professionally.
“It was an unforgettable experience to be among such esteemed company, including members of the legendary 1975 Karate Team. A proud moment for me and my family, Karate and Silsden!”
He added that representing his hometown at such a distinguished venue made the honour even more meaningful.
