PEOPLE across the Keighley district can earn rewards for cycling, walking and using public transport.

A new app enables users to gain points which may then be exchanged for vouchers to spend at a range of retailers, or donate to charities.

People can also earn tickets for prize draws.

The BetterPoints initiative is being funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority as part of a push to encourage people to make a shift from cars to healthier modes of transport.

When the scheme was first proposed, combined authority officials forecast the app would lead to a 25 per cent increase in the number of journeys being made on foot, by bike or using public transport among users.

The authority hopes the venture will also help support the region's economy.

Major brands that have signed up include Ikea, Starbucks, Argos, Greggs and Costa, but small independent businesses are encouraged to get involved too.

The launch of the scheme in West Yorkshire builds on the success of BetterPoints programmes already running in other areas of the UK – including in South and North Yorkshire, where similar initiatives have helped thousands of people walk and cycle more often while supporting businesses and charities.

The BetterPoints app is free to download, and the scheme is open to anyone living, working or studying in the Bradford district – plus Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds or Wakefield.

Users can earn one BetterPoint for every minute they run, ride, walk or wheel within West Yorkshire, up to 30 minutes a day.

And they earn 15 points for every bus, tram or train journey they make over a quarter of a mile within West Yorkshire, up to two journeys per day.

The app also lets users know how many calories they've burned and how much CO2 they have avoided by using active travel.

Jack Windle, chief sustainable transport officer for the BetterPoints scheme, says: “Active travel is one of the simplest ways to improve population health, but it needs to feel accessible and worthwhile.

“BetterPoints helps remove barriers by rewarding everyday journeys and supporting healthier habits while connecting people with local businesses and charities.”

The BetterPoints app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Once signed up, the app will start measuring everyday journeys and users will earn points automatically.

Retailers and charities can contact the BetterPoints team via the app to learn more about getting involved.
