I WAS quite surprised to read in the Keighley News that the police precept is to be increased, yet again.
It is also stated that the public had agreed to the increase. I have no way of knowing the result of the 'vote' but would be interested to know the facts and who verifies such a process.
Any increase in the cost of policing should be evident in the service of the force – sorry, service to the public.
Every person I speak to agrees that the police are invisible on our streets, both in the town and rural areas.
As I have stated many times before, the last time I saw a real police officer walking the beat in our areas was over 15 years ago.
A reader's letter in the February 12 Keighley News addresses the lack of police on the streets and the potential danger to pedestrians from scooters etc being ridden on the pavements.
I agree totally, but just imagine, if – and I repeat, if – a police officer was on patrol on the street, he or she could be in danger of being run over by such a machine!
The offending rider could be excused by stating he did not know what the person dressed in uniform, waving his hand, was all about.
Nothing will change, apart from the cost to the ever-suffering public.
Just a footnote, perhaps the increase in the precept is to pay for the new police station?
