Keighley MP demands more powers to shut down 'dodgy shops'

Speaking in Parliament, he raised the case of five town-centre premises which have had their alcohol licences revoked.

The move came after raids by West Yorkshire Trading Standards and police uncovered the sale of illegal tobacco products.

Mr Moore said despite their activities, the shops – Wisla, Keighley Pound Plus and Keighley Continental, in Cavendish Street; and Keighley Mini Market, and European Food, in North Street – remain open.

He told the Commons: "They were stripped of their alcohol licences for illegal activity, but they remain open and no convictions have followed.

"Will the leader of the House grant a debate so we can propose that when shops are found to be carrying out illegal activity, they can be shut down and replaced with proper, law-abiding, independent businesses?"

Sir Alan Campbell, leader of the House, said: "These matters are often better decided locally because they depend on local circumstances, but if the honourable gentleman wants to go into greater detail and hear from the relevant minister – in case existing rules aren't being applied properly – I encourage him to apply for a Westminster Hall debate.”
