A KEIGHLEY man who tried to avoid speeding tickets by lying to police about having his number plates stolen has been jailed.
Ayaan Rafiq, 31, was caught speeding at Shipley in May 2023, but a Notice of Intended Prosecution was cancelled after he told police the plates on his BMW had been stolen.
Two months later, he made the same excuse when caught speeding on the M1.
But police investigations discovered Rafiq’s phone was in the car at the times and locations of the speeding incidents.
Rafiq, of Castle Road, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and making a false report to police.
He was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court to a total of 20 months in prison.
He was also banned from driving for 22 months.
It was the second time Rafiq had been investigated for such crimes.
In 2024, he was given a suspended sentence for trying to evade speeding offences.
Rachel Wainwright, of the West Yorkshire Police prosecutions and casualty prevention unit, says: “Perverting the course of justice is a serious offence and I hope this outcome sends a clear warning to anyone who thinks they can evade detection for offences committed on our roads."
