PLANS to launch a national consultation over tougher fireworks regulations have been welcomed by Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore.
But he warns that it's "absolutely essential" the move leads to action.
Mr Moore has been pressing in Parliament for stricter laws, including a reduction in the maximum noise levels of fireworks and the limiting of public sales.
He says: "We’ve seen the devastating effect of fireworks misuse across Keighley. They disturb the peace of neighbourhoods, terrify pets and leave vulnerable people trapped in their own homes.
"Public support for change on fireworks is overwhelming. In the past two years alone, I've had the honour of leading two major petition debates in Parliament on behalf of nearly half a million people across the UK who want to see tougher regulation. I've met campaigners and families whose lives have been shattered by fireworks misuse.
"What we need now is proper action from the Government. This cannot be a consultation for consultation’s sake.
"That means looking seriously at measures such as reducing noise limits, restricting sales and ensuring proper enforcement. So while I welcome the fact the Government is now looking at this issue, it's essential that consultation leads to real action."
