RAILWAY enthusiasts are being challenged to see how far they can travel in a single day.
The Great Race Across the North, organised by Northern, will take place on July 25 as part of the launch of the new Northern Explorer ticket.
Alex Hornby, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: "The new Northern Explorer ticket is part of our continuing strategy to provide simpler, better value ticketing for customers.
"We have worked hard to make it as simple as possible and to reduce the barriers to travel – one ticket, one price, and access to our whole railway."
The competition aims to find the person who can visit the most railway stations across the North in one day using only Northern trains.
Ten participants will be selected to take part, with each starting from a Manchester station at 10am.
Each will receive a free Northern Explorer ticket for the day.
That's 10 passengers setting off from Manchester at 10am in a race to reach the highest number of stations across the North of England.
Participants must disembark and take a photograph of themselves at each station entrance before catching the next train.
The winner will receive a night out for two in Manchester, including a stay at the Midland Hotel, a rum tasting at Salford Distillery, dinner at The Black Friar, and tickets to The Cube.
The Northern Explorer ticket, which costs £35, allows unlimited travel for one day across the entire Northern network.
Tickets can be purchased up to 12 weeks in advance from ticket machines, station offices, or online.
The ticket replaces several Ranger and Rover fares with a simpler, unified option for travel across the network.
Northern operates 2,650 services a day, connecting more than 500 stations.
