STEAM journeys through dramatic landscapes will return as part of a special anniversary.
The Waverley, a summer steam service operated by The Railway Touring Company, will run across the Settle & Carlisle Railway on select Sundays—July 19, August 9 and 23, and September 13—to mark the line’s 150th anniversary.
Departing from York, Leeds, Keighley, and Skipton, the trains will offer passengers a nostalgic journey through the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines, featuring views of the Ribblehead Viaduct and Three Peaks, as well as tunnels at Blea Moor.
The Railway Touring Company has run the route each summer since 2010.
Its managing director said: “The Settle & Carlisle Railway is an experience on many people’s bucket list.
"Taking the journey by steam is the icing on the cake with passengers young and old never failing to be excited by the combination of a magnificent steam locomotive and this dramatic route."
Historic Battle of Britain Class locomotive No. 34067 Tangmere, built in Brighton in 1947, is expected to haul this year’s trains.
To mark the occasion, the Settle Carlisle Railway Development Company, Friends of the Settle Carlisle Line, and the Settle Carlisle Railway Trust have planned additional anniversary events and activities.
