A JUDGE has issued a warrant for the arrest of a Keighley man who was due to be sentenced for causing death by dangerous driving.
Samir Amjid, 23, was due to be sentenced at crown court on Tuesday following the death of Bradford woman Khadeeja Mahmood in April 2024.
What happened?
The 20-year-old suffered fatal injuries when an Audi RS3 being driven by Amjid crashed into a wall on Baldwin Lane near Clayton village on the afternoon of April 12, 2024.
Amjid, of View Road in Keighley, pleaded guilty at a court hearing earlier this year to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving along with offences of causing death by driving while disqualified and causing death by driving while uninsured.
A police statement at the time of the incident said that a 20-year-woman had died after being taken to hospital in a serious condition.
It said that driver had also been taken to hospital in a serious condition.
'I'm terribly sorry we can't proceed today'
On Tuesday, barrister Richard Canning, for Amjid, said his client was not at court, but he could not say for certain that he had been told about the date for sentence.
Members of Ms Mahmood’s family were sat in the jury box for the hearing and Mr Canning apologised for any upset that was caused.
After a discussion about why Majid may not have attended the Honorary Recorder of Bradford Judge Jonathan Rose said he intended to issue a warrant not backed for bail.
Judge Rose apologised to the family of Ms Mahmood and added: "I’m terribly terribly sorry we can’t proceed today, but you will be notified of course by the police as soon as we are in a position for the case to proceed.”
