More than 200 people took part in a new charity walk through Brontë country.

The first-ever Brontë Pub Walk started in Haworth and wound through Stanbury, Ponden and the outskirts of Oakworth, finishing on Haworth’s Main Street.

Walkers followed in the footsteps of the famous literary sisters while raising funds for Sue Ryder’s palliative and end-of-life care services.

Routes of five and 10 miles were available, with pub stops along the way.

Adam Brunksill, regional fundraising team manager at Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice, said: "We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who took part in our very first Brontë Pub Walk and helped make it such a special day.

"It was fantastic to see people enjoying the beautiful countryside, visiting some of the places connected to the Brontë family and, of course, stopping for a well-earned drink or two along the way.

"Most importantly, by taking part and raising sponsorship, our supporters like Bulloughs Cleaning Services helped to ensure Sue Ryder can continue providing people with vital palliative and end-of-life care and grief support, because no one should face death alone."

Funds raised from the event will support Sue Ryder’s inpatient and community care, as well as its online bereavement services.

The charity’s resources include a dedicated bereavement community and resources to help people cope with grief.

Among those taking part was Beth Cook, 30, from Oakworth, who walked the 10-mile route with 10 friends and her six-month-old son Freddie.

Ms Cook said: "We did the Sue Ryder Wharfedale pub walk and had a great time, so we were delighted when this one was created as it’s local to us.

"Sue Ryder is very close to everybody’s heart in the community – so we’re always pleased to do something for it.

"It’s a nice walk, a few pub stops on the way, what more can you ask?"

The walk passed by the Brontë Parsonage Museum and St Michael and All Angels’ Church, where several members of the Brontë family are buried.

The event gave participants a chance to combine fundraising and socialising with a tribute to the area’s literary heritage.

On Saturday 22 May, Sue Ryder’s Wharfedale Pub Walk will return, offering a 10-mile walk in the Yorkshire Dales, featuring refreshment stops at country inns along the route with country inns as waymarks.
