Crowds flock to 69th Keighley and District Agricultural Show

The Keighley and District Agricultural Show, held on Saturday, September 5, at Marley Fields, drew visitors from across the country for a full day of livestock competitions, horticultural displays, flower arranging, terrier racing, and more.

William Mitchell, organiser and president, said: "I would say it's Keighley's main event.

"We had over 70 stalls, all local businesses. 

"People came out in force, and from far and wide - we had a fantastic turn out.

"The atmosphere was amazing and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

"Since Covid, the show has gone from strength to strength."

Only event left of its kind in Bradford

Now in its 69th year, the event is believed to be the only remaining agricultural show in the Bradford district.

Mr Mitchell said: "It's the only agricultural show left in the Bradford district, as Bingley Show got cancelled after Covid. 

"We have had grants from Keighley Town Council, so we can keep going and keep our ticket prices down."

Mr Mitchell has a personal connection to the show, having been involved all his life and serving as chairman for over a decade before becoming president.

He said: "My dad was one of the founding members of the show – he's 92 now.

"I've been chairman for 15 years and I'm very pleased to have been chosen as president this year."

Quadbike stunts amazed crowds

New for this year was a quadbike stuntman in the main ring, which proved popular with the crowds.

Mr Mitchell said: "It was very successful – people enjoyed it.

"We'd certainly book him again." 

'We've got such a good team'

He also praised the team of staff and volunteers who make the event possible.

He said: "It's great we've got such a good team.

"We're always open to more volunteers."

Terrier racing set to return among other events

Planning is already underway for next year’s event.

Mr Mitchell said: "We've already booked a sheep show for next year.

"The terrier racing is also booked for next year – it's great fun, especially when people put their own dogs in."

The next Keighley and District Agricultural Show will take place on Saturday, September 4, 2027.
