Two by two, hand in hand, Aire View Infants School pupils marched around Silsden in an attempt to beat a record for the world’s largest walking bus.

The 278 children set off yesterday at the same time as hundreds of thousands of other pupils across the UK, all bidding to enter the Book of World Records for a Giant Walking Bus and send a stark message to the world about the importance of road safety.

The national event, organised by charity Brake, aimed to raise awareness of the ‘appalling’ number of children killed and injured on foot by fast traffic and encourage drivers to slow down to 20mph or lower in built-up areas.

Cath Smith, school walking bus co-ordinator at Aire View, said: “The whole school is taking part and parents have sponsored their children to raise money for Brake “We take road safety very seriously here and I think it is great that the children are thinking of other children who need their help, learning about keeping safe on the roads .”

More than 135,000 children were simultaneously expected to take part in yesterday’s event. The current world record for a walking bus stands at 119,697 .
