England’s poor result against Algeria was not the only shock Keighley husband Leo Foley received on his first wedding anniversary.

His football-mad wife, Mandi, 47, had transformed her wedding dress into the St George’s Cross to symbolise her joint passion for her husband and her team.

Unfortunately, while her efforts did not seem to enhance England’s performance in South Africa, the next day Mandi’s husband whisked her away for a romantic stay in Whitby to celebrate their anniversary.

Mandi, from Greystones Drive, said: “If you can’t be crazy at my age, when can you be? Where we live there is a house decorated in flags and I thought ‘I can do one better than that’.

“I had been dying to try my dress on again since the wedding because I absolutely loved it and seeing as England were playing and it was our first anniversary it was all very fitting.”

The grandmother-of-one and senior support worker added that her bus driver husband “nearly dropped” when she came down to watch Friday’s game in her St George wedding dress.
