A woman has told of her enduring 60-year love for her “hero” wrestling husband.

Nora and Arthur Jackson — who grew up on the same road, Parkwood Street, Keighley — today celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary.

But for Nora, 80, it is just another perfect day of a “very happy marriage” to Arthur, 83, whom she met “properly” on a coach trip to Blackpool.

Although the pair both lived on the same street and went to Parkwood Primary School, they didn’t converse until that seaside trip.

They were married ten months later at St Mary’s Church, in Eastwood.

They had a son, Barrie, now 58, two years later but by this time Arthur was touring the country performing in a ring in front of hundreds in his role as a professional wrestler, which he did from 1952-64.

It was the continuation of his embodiment of a “hero”, after receiving a certificate from the Royal Humane Society for rescuing a four-year-old boy from drowning in Aireworth Mill Dam, when he was 19 and working as a milkman.

He also rescued another child when he worked at Keighley swimming baths, for which he received a letter of commendation from the police.

The couple, from Aireville Street, in Utley, will celebrate with a meal with family – including their two grandchildren and great-grandchildren — before enjoying a Mediterranean cruise.
