A “passionate” fundraising group rallied over the weekend to collect more than £3,000 to help the victims of the Pakistan flood disaster.

Hameed Islam, who owns WYL Estate Agents in Russell Street, Keighley, led a group of people street-collecting around Highfield and Parkwood on Saturday. Their efforts raised £2,000.

On Sunday Mr Islam, family and friends organised a car wash outside his home on East Avenue, and raised another £1,000.

The group of around 20 is planning a further charity car wash on Sunday, September 5, 1pm-7pm, on East Avenue and is appealing for people to support it.

Mr Islam, 26, said: “We aim to raise double with the next car wash in September – at least £2,000.

“Everyone has been pitching in – I even had my three-month-old son holding a sponge and doing his bit on Sunday which was cute.

“The devastation from the floods is immense and everyone needs to be doing as much as they can to help.

“It has affected so many lives – it is a real crisis and we want to help to do what we can over the next three years.”

Mr Islam said he wanted the people of Keighley to know that donating to the Keighley Pakistan Flood Appeal would mean 100 per cent of the donations would go directly to the cause, with none spent on administration fees.

He said: “I am passionate about Keighley and the town’s ability to make a real difference in this disaster.”

Mr Islam, who has relatives and land in Pakistan, plans to take video footage of the fundraising to show to people. The floods began more than two weeks ago in the mountainous north-west and have swept south across the country, deluging its agricultural heartland, killing more than 2,000 people and leaving six million in need of “immediate assistance”.
