A 90-year-old woman is defying the advancing years with some nifty footwork at a Keighley line-dancing club.

Marjorie Gill (pictured), of Dean Street, Haworth, is a member of the ‘Alley Cats’, who meet at the Sue Belcher Community Centre, in Bracken Bank.

She marked her 90th birthday last Friday. Mrs Gill said: “I’ve been line-dancing for about 15 years.

“I did have a spell where I stopped due to a bad back and arthritis in both knees but that was just for a year.

“I do everything for myself, I’m not on any benefit. I’ve always thought that the more you do the better you are, it’s no good sitting at home moping.

“You’ve got to get on with your life the best you can.

“I like watching football, tennis and rugby on television, but I never watch any soaps. I live on a hill in Haworth and walking up and down that is another thing that keeps me going.”

Alley Cats dance teacher, Shirley Everett, said: “Marjorie is our oldest member.

“She loves coming here and she likes the company. She is quite agile and is willing to have a go at everything we do.”

She said the line-dancing group currently had at least 30 members and had been going for 15 years.

At last Wednesday afternoon’s session Mrs Gill was treated to a surprise birthday cake. She had already baked her own biscuits and brought them along to share with the rest of the dance group.
