Keighley MP Kris Hopkins has welcomed assurances by the Prime Minister over the future of a high-speed rail link to the North, calling overcrowding on trains serving Bradford district “unacceptable and unsustainable”.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s questions, Mr Hopkins has gained an assurance from David Cameron that a new super-fast railway linking London with Leeds and Manchester – known as “High Speed 2” – will go ahead as planned.

He said: “Will the Government go ahead with High Speed 2, a project which is extremely important to the economy and jobs in the North?

“If the answer is yes, can I suggest that we start laying the track in West Yorkshire first?”

Mr Cameron said he was “very grateful for that enthusiastic endorsement”.

He continued: “I believe we should go ahead with High Speed 2.”

Speaking afterwards, Mr Hopkins said the High Speed 2 was also a means of increasing capacity.

“The overcrowding on the East Coast mainline at the present time is unacceptable and unsustainable,” he said.
