Keighley district youngsters have been invited to use their creative talents to celebrate the extraordinary life of the first man on the moon.

The Star Centre, at Keighley Campus Leeds City College, is calling on primary school pupils to explore the furthest reaches of their imaginations and create a banner in honour of Neil Armstrong.

The design is to recognise the astronaut’s successful moon landing on July 21, 1969, and the impact this event has had on history.

The winning pupil will see their design made into a roll-up banner, which will be put on display by the Star Centre.

In addition, the winning school will receive a free visit to the facility. The group members will have a chance to dress up as astronauts and explore the centre’s simulated planetary surface. They can also experience what it is like to be a space mission controller, and will sample the wonders of the universe in the centre’s cosmodome.

Rebecca Thorpe, Star Centre curriculum leader, said: “The moon landings were the pinnacle of technological progress at the time. We would like to honour Neil Armstrong because Neil himself humbly acknowledged that he was just the figurehead of the achievement of the Apollo missions.

“He will forever be remembered as the first man on the moon, yet the space programme had taken six million, seven hundred and fifty thousand man years of work. It is this element of working together that the Star Centre promotes.

“The centre inspires visitors to be curious about their world and universe and to play their part within it.”

Keighley firm Sign and Design will be providing the selected version of the banner. The template for would-be primary school designers is available to download at starcentre.org.

All competition entries should be sent to Rebecca no later than Friday November 30. Post entries to: Rebecca Thorpe, Neil Armstrong Competition, Leeds City College, Bradford Road, Keighley BD21 4HQ. For more information, contact Rebecca at info@starcentre.org.
